Windows 10 update: Microsoft rolls out its 20H2 feature update

Microsoft is rolling the next version of Windows 10 called “20H2.” Users can check for the update from their settings app manually.

Microsoft says, 20H2 update comes with a lot of improvements that should improve the users’ experience.

This feature update is rolled out via an enablement package that would allow users to update their system with a single reboot. This enablement package feature was something introduced firstly with the Windows 10 May 2020 update, that would simply turn on dormant features such as the new start menu.

To get the update via enablement package, the users should at least be using the September 2020 cumulative updates, says Microsoft. So, if you are not using the September cumulative update 2020, install it and then follow the following steps:

  • Head to the Settings > Update & Security,
  • Click on ‘Download & install now” button.

Noticeable feature in this feature update

  • Theme aware start menu – In the start menu, you will see colored backgrounds live tiles that are supposed to match the look and feel of the new fluent design system.

Microsoft said, “We are freshening up the Start menu with a more streamlined design that removes the solid color backplates behind the logos in the apps list and applies a uniform, partially transparent background to the tiles.”

  • Built-in Chromium based Edge browser – Chromium based browser will be integrated directly with the OS first time
  • Alt +Tab improvements – Earlier, Alt +Tab switcher of Windows 10 allows users to switch between the open windows of the apps. With the October update, this will show the Edge tabs right alongside the apps windows, making users easier to switch between the open tabs as seamless as switching between open windows.
  • Change in “About” page of system settings – In 20H2 update, “About settings” under “Settings > System > About” will show all your information found in Control Panel. With this new page, you can copy your system information to the clipboard and so easily share this information with Microsoft tech support for debugging.

Other improvements

  • Improvement in Modern Device Management
  • Now, you can change your display refresh rate from Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings
  • Tablet experience for 2-in-1 device: On detaching the keyboard on surface book-like device, you will not see the Microsoft’s notification asking you to switch to tablet mode.
