New set of Windows 10 Intel CPU microcode after multiple bugs impacting CPUs

A new set of Intel microcode updates are now available for Windows 10 20H2, 2004, 1909, and older versions after the fix of the bugs that impacts multiple Intel CPUs.

Intel released the update after the discovery of bugs in their CPUs so that the OS venders can patch their CPU behavior and address or at least provide mitigation for the issues.

Total seven CPU families that receive the latest fixes from Intel include 10th Generation Intel Core Processor Family, Comet Lake S (6+2), Comet Lake S (10+2), Comet Lake U62, Comet Lake U6+2, Ice Lake Y42/U42 ES2 SUP and Lakefield.

The associated Microsoft update will automatically be offered to the devices with the following processors families, via the Windows Update.

Before the installation to the new Microsoft updates, the users should note that the previous updates have caused the performance issues with the older CPUs or system hangs because of how the bugs and vulnerabilities were mitigated.

Microsoft adds, “Consult with your device manufacturer and Intel through their websites regarding their microcode recommendation for your device before you apply this update to your device”.

If you want to install the Microsoft updates, you should firstly ensure if your CPU is supported. You can check it through Device Manager or download the CPU-Z program to view the processors’ family and Model numbers. If you are beginner, these guides will help you in using Device Manager:

  • Open the Windows 10 Start Menu,
  • Type Device Manager in the search box area, and hit enter,
  • This will open the Device Manager,
  • Scroll down to find Processor, expand it,

You can find the information about the computer’ CPU. Using CPU-Z, you can find the even more details like the processor family, stepping info, revision, and model number.

After successfully installing the Intel Microcode updates, reboot your system to fully deploy the correct patch. However, before installing these updates, you should make sure that all opened documents are saved and all programs are closed properly.
