Users can enjoy Reserved Storage feature with Window 10 May 2020 update

We all know that the May 2020 Windows 10 update is to be rolling out to the consumers and enterprises in couple of weeks. This update will arrive with the ability to manage Reserved Storage from the command line. This feature is sets aside a portion of the Windows system drive for using critical system and driver updates.

This Reserved storage will be start at minimum of 7GB and can be increased in the size as needed. For OEMs and new PCs, Microsoft has stated, these will require reserved stored of 32 GB at minimum.

According to the Microsoft, Reserved Storage addresses a storage shortage issue when performing the updates. It receives certain amount of space for apps, updates and drives for the smooth functioning.

You can see the current reserved storage settings in May 2019 update by the steps – settings>System>Storage and then click on the ‘Show more category’ link. This will open a page containing the information on how much space the system files and Reserved Storage is using. Using it is a risky process because it requires users to disabling it via the Registry.

With the May 2020 update, Microsoft intrudes a option to tweak Reserved Storage via the DISM command line tool. DISM or Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool is a command line tool is used to service and prepare Windows images, including those used for Windows PC, Window RE and Windows setup.

With the Windows 10 2004 or May 2020 update, Microsoft has added additional commands that allows users to manage the Windows 10 Reserved Storage. To use this DISM, users have to launch a Windows 10 elevated command prompt and then any of the following command to manage the Reserved Storage:

To check whether Reserved storage is enabled:

DISM /Online /Get-ReservedStorageState

To enable reserved storage, you can run the following command:

DISM /Online /Set-ReservedStorageState /State:Enabled

To disable reserved storage, you can run the following command:

Dism /Online /Set-ReservedStorageState /State:Disabled
