Remove DHLP ransomware and restore encrypted files

Easy tips to delete DHLP ransomware and retrieve data

DHLP ransomware is a malicious computer infection belongs to Dharma ransomware group. The malware is designed to encrypt stored files on the compromised host computer –in order to demand ransom payment for the decryption. In simple words, the victims can’t access to their files and they are asked – to get the data in the accessible form. During the encryption process, the files are renamed with this pattern: original filename, unique ID assigned to the victim, crooks’ email address and .dhlp extension. For example, a file 1.jpg would become “1.jpg.id-C279F237.[[email protected]].dhlp” – following encryption.

Once this process is complete, the ransom notes are displayed/ created by the ransomware in a pop-up window and the MANUALdata.txt text file. The message in the .txt file states that the victims’ data have been encrypted. To recover it, the note instructs them to contact to the crooks behind DHLP ransomware via the provided email address. The pop-up provides the further detailed information. It clarifies about the files encryption. Additionally, it states that if no response is received within 12 hours, the secondary email address should be used for the communication purpose.

The pop-up window ends with a warning to the users not to rename the filenames of the encrypted files and/or attempt to decrypt them using third party tool/ software – they may cause permanent data loss. Unfortunately, in most of the cases with ransomware type infections, without the involvement of the crooks behind it- the decryption is not possible. It might be when the malicious program is at development stage and/or has some bugs/ flaws in them.

Whatever be the case, you are highly not recommended to contact/ pay to the crooks under any circumstances. These people will never provide you the decryption tool even if all their demands are met. The best way is to remove DHLP ransomware and recover the files using existing backup .if no backup option available, check if shadow copies exist- they are automatically created backups created by Windows OS. Below the post, in the data recovery option, you will find complete guide how to recover the files using Volume Shadow Copies.

In some cases, shadow copies could be deleted by ransomware by running certain malicious scripts. If this is the case, you have to rely on some third party data recovery tools. Nowadays, these tools are designed with special functionality added and so you can anticipate files recovery using that. Before attempting to recover the files using any of the stated methods, make ensure the virus is not running on the system. If it is, it will interfere during the files recovery process and will make you proceed with the files recovery to the system. Below the post, you will also find the complete guide to perform DHLP ransomware removal.

How did DHLP ransomware infiltrate my system?

Ransomware and other malicious malware are often disguised as or bundled with regular software and then offered for the download on various untrustworthy downloading channels such as unofficial and free file hosting sites, p2p networks and other third-party downloaders. Illegal activation tools and fake updaters are the prime examples of that. Cracks cause system infections instead of activating licensed products. Illegitimate updaters infect systems by abusing the flaws/ bugs of outdated software or by installing malware rather than the updates.

Malware can be distributed through spam email campaigns – large scale operations during which thousands of spam emails are designed and delivered. These emails are presented as official, urgent, important and/or disguised as mail from genuine companies, institutions, authorities and other entities. They have infectious files attached to it or malicious links inside them. The virulent files are often archives (ZIP, RAR, etc.), executables (.exe, .run, etc.), Microsoft Office and PDF documents, JavaScript, and so forth. When these files are executed, run or otherwise opened- the infection process is triggered.
