How to remove Crypter ransomware and recover encrypted files

Complete tips to delete Crypter ransomware and decrypt data

Crypter ransomware is malware from VoidCrypt ransomware family. The malware is designed to encrypt all stored files and then demand ransom payment for the decryption. During encryption process, it appends the filenames of the encrypted files with .crypter extension. For example, a file 1.jpg would appear something similar to 1.jpg.crypter, 2.jpg to 2.jpg.crypter and so on. After that, the ransomware drops “!INFO.HTA” that contains a ransom demanding message for how to allegedly recover the encrypted files.

The ransom demanding message in the pop-up informs the users about the files encryption which is done using a strong cryptographic algorithm. To recover these data, the note states the decryption tool is must. As per the message, the crooks are the only people who have the right decryption tool. The price of the tool is not mentioned in the ransom message. It states the users need to establish a contact to them via the provided email address to get further instructions. There is a time limit of 48 hours given to the users to establish to contact to avoid addition in the price of the decryption tool.

Payments are usually asked in bitcon or other digital cryptocurrencies so that the transactions can’t be traced. Before the payment, free decryption service is offered. Do not fall for it – it is not more than a scam. It is just a trick to make people transfer the demanded sum. Once payment is received, the crooks will disappear leaving the victims without their files. So, better if you avoid paying/ contacting the crooks and think of some alternatives for the files recovery.

How did Crypter ransomware infiltrate my system?

Ransomware and other malicious malware are often distributed using a variety of techniques and methods. These programs can be disguised as and/or bundled with regular software. Various untrustworthy downloading channels such as p2p networks, free file hosting sites and third party downloaders/ installers act as source for it. Illegal activation tools and fake software updaters are the prime example of malware- proliferating content. Cracking tools cause system infection instead of activating licensed software. Fake software updating tools infect systems by exploiting bugs/ flaws of outdated software or by direct downloading malware instead of providing updates.

Scam campaigns are also employed in malware distribution. The campaigns refer large scale operations during which thousands of spam emails are designed and delivered. These letters are presented as official, important, urgent and similar. They contain download links of infectious files or links for such files are attached to the emails. The virulent files can be in any forms, such as PDF and Microsoft Office Documents, Archives, Executables, JavaScript and so on. When these files are executed, run or otherwise opened- the malware download/ installation process is triggered.
