How to remove Bom ransomware and recover files

Complete tips to delete Bom ransomware and decrypt files

Ransomware type of viruses is designed to prevent users’ access to their crucial files stored on their systems. It does this by doing files encryption. The encoding is done using some strong cipher algorithm or with a unique private key. The main aim of the crooks is to force users to pay money to them for the decryption, i.e., the decryption tool/ key.

Bom ransomware encrypts files and modifies the filenames with [email protected] email address, a string of random characters, and the “.bom” extension. For example, it renames a file 1.jpg to “1.jpg.bom”, “2.jpg” to “2.jpg.bom”, and so on. It creates a text file named Scratch to put ransom demands to the victims. This ransomware belongs to VoidCrypt ransomware family.

Usually, ransom demanding messages provide contact and payment information such as email address, price of the decryption tool and how to pay it. The Bom ransomware’s ransom text can be divided in two parts. Inin the first part, it informs the users that their system is infected with the ransomware that results in encryption of all stored files and the restoration requires a unique decryption tool.

On the second part, it instructs users that they need to find “prvkey*.txt.key” file and send it to the crooks’ email address – [email protected]. Also, they can attach one encrypted file with it. As per the message, the free decryption of this file is provided as a proof that the files decryption is possible. Here is the full text presented in Bom ransomware’s ransom note:

All Your Files Has Been Encrypted

You Have to Pay to Get Your Files Back

1-Go to C:\ProgramData\ or in Your other Drives   and send us prvkey*.txt.key  file ,  *  might be a number (like this : prvkey3.txt.key)

2-You can send some file little than 1mb for Decryption test to trust us But the test File should not contain valuable data

3-Payment should be with Bitcoin

4-Changing Windows without saving prvkey.txt.key file will cause permanete Data loss

in Case of no Answer:

Usually, in most of the cases with ransomware infection, the decryption is not possible without using a right decryption tool that only the developers have. However, paying/contacting these people is not recommended as these people often do not send the decryptor even when the payment is received. So, you should think of some alternatives for the files recovery.

The best way is to remove Bom ransomware and recover the files encrypted by it using existing backups. If no such backups are available, use Volume Shadow Copies (automatically created backups from Windows OS). The Bom ransomware might delete this Shadow Copy. In such a case, data recovery tool from third party is only available option you have.

Below the post, in the data recovery section, you will be guided how you can easily recover the encrypted files from above stated methods. There you will also find complete guide how to remove Bom ransomware from system. The removal steps are provided in a sequence, perform the way as mentioned so that you will find not trouble during the removal process and easily recover the files.

How did Bom ransomware enter my system?

Quite often, users install malware through spam emails. These emails install malware when they execute a malicious attachment or a file downloaded from the website link in it. Another way to distribute malware is to trick people into unknowingly installing Trojans. These are viruses that cause chain infection, i.e., download/ install other malicious malware.

P2p networks, free file hosting sites and third party downloaders/installers and etc can distribute malware by presenting it as legit file, program. Fake software updaters and software cracking tools are two other ways to distribute malicious programs. They cause infection by supposedly updating/ activating installed software.

How to prevent ransomware infection?

Software and files should always be downloaded from official, trustworthy websites and direct links. Attachments on any irrelevant emails should never be clicked if they are sent from suspicious, unknown addresses – especially the presented attachments and website links in them as spam emails cause system infection only when these files/ links are being clicked.

Installed software should have to be updated and activated using tools/ functions from official software developers. Computer should always be scanned for threats for regular basis. This should be done using some reputable antivirus tool. The anti-virus tool you are using should have the latest virus detection database.
