How to remove Mpmp ransomware and recover encrypted files

Easy steps to delete Mpmp ransomware

Mpmp ransomware is a huge risk ransomware infection and belongs to VoidCrypt ransomware family. Like other ransomware viruses of this family, it encrypts stored files and renames them. Also, it drops a ransom note and provides an instruction how to allegedly recover encrypted files. The files encrypted by this malware will receive .mmp extension, plus victims’ ID and crooks’ email address attached to them. For example, a file named “1.jpg” to “1.jpg.[[email protected]][YL03P8OKRI1D2XU].mpmp”, “2.jpg” to “2.jpg.[[email protected]][YL03P8OKRI1D2XU].mpmp”, and so on. Rightly after the files encryption process is done, the ransomware drops “!INFO.HTA” (the ransom note) on each folder containing encrypted files.

The ransom note states that the stored files have been encrypted with strong cipher algorithm. So, a unique decryption tool/ key are needed for the files recovery. Unfortunately, this is true. The crooks store such keys on some remote server that only they can access to it. The ransom note asks users to contact the crooks via the provided email address and purchase the decryption tool from them. The price of the decryption tool is undisclosed. It is mentioned in the note that this becomes double of itself after 48 hours. Victims are asked to send some encrypted files to test the capability of the decryptor. It is strongly recommended not to trust the crooks behind it. These people do not send the decryption tool even after the payment is done.

The best way to deal with this situation is to remove Mpmp ransomware and recover the files using alternatives. The malware removal is necessary to prevent further files encryption and to avoid system damages due to the background processes. Below the post, you will find both manual as well as automatic guide to perform the threat removal.  After the removal process is done, use existing backups and restore the encrypted files. If you have no such backups, you should check whether Volume Shadow Copies are available or not. In most cases, this backup option is left untouched during ransomware attacks and files encryption process. If this is the case with Mpmp ransomware as well, there will be an option for the files recovery available for you- refer below the post under the data recovery section for the stepwise guide for the same.

How did Mpmp ransomware intrude in?

Usually, malware are distributed through these common ways- mal-spam emails, unreliable file and/or software download sources, Trojans, fake software updating tools or unofficial software activation tools. In the first case, users infect their devices when they download and open a file from email that was received from cybercriminals. Typically, such people attach malicious MS Office Documents, PDF, Archives, JavaScript or Executable files. It is worthwhile to mention that the emails could contain links for such files.

In the second case, users end up malware installation when they download a file from some unreliable channels such as unofficial websites, freeware download websites, free file hosting pages, p2p networks, third party downloaders. As a rule, such pages spread malware by presenting it as legit software. Trojans are malicious malware are that are especially designed to download/ install other malware. Fake software updaters, if used, can cause system infection either by exploiting bugs/flaws of outdated software or by directly download malware instead of providing updates. Unofficial activation tools infect systems by supposedly bypassing activation key for paid software.
