How to remove MOSN ransomware and recover files

Complete tips to delete MOSN ransomware and decrypt data

MOSN ransomware is a rogue piece of software, classified as ransomware. The malware operates by encrypting stored files and then demanding ransom payment for the decryption. In other words, the victims cannot access the files and they are asked to pay- to restore access to their data once again.

During the process of the files encryption, the ransomware appends .MOSN extension to each of the encrypted files. For example, it renames 1.jpg as 1.jpg.MOSN and etc. When this process is completed, the desktop wallpaper automatically gets changed and a text file named “INFORMATION_READ_ME.txt” is displayed onto the desktop. Both the wallpaper and the text file contain ransom notes.

The message in the desktop wallpaper states that that the decryption key is needed for the files decryption. This key can be purchased for 300 USD in Bitcoin cryptocurrency. For more information, the victims are instructed to contact the crooks via provided emails.

The note in the INFORMATION_READ_ME.txt file indicates the number of the encrypted files. Also, it repeats that the communication with the crooks must be initiated. Additionally, the message contains unique ID assigned to the victim, which they can include in their email letters.

Unfortunately, in most of the cases with ransomware infection, without the involvement of the crooks behind it- the decryption is impossible. It might be when the ransomware is at its initial stage or has certain bugs/ flaws in them.

Regardless the case, it is strongly not recommended to contact/ pay to the crooks under any circumstances. These people will never provide you the decryption tool even if you fulfill all their demands.

Removing MOSN ransomware is necessary to avoid further files encryptions. However, this process will not decrypt the files already encrypted. To get them back, use the existing backups you have. This backup file should be the one created the files encryption and stored on some remote location during the time of system attack.

If you have no such backup available, once check if Shadow Copies exist. These automatically created backups from Windows OS sometimes left untouched during the system attack and files encryption process.

Check below the post for the complete guide how to recover files using Shadow Copies. If the MOSN ransomware belongs to the viruses that delete Shadow Copies by running PowerShell or other such commands, the only option left with you is to use data recovery tools from third party belonging.

How did MOSN ransomware enter my system?

Ransomware and other malicious malware are often distributed via spam campaigns- mass-scale operations where thousands of spam emails are designed and delivered. These letters are presented as official, urgent, priority and similar. These emails have infectious files or links for such files in them.

The virulent files can be in any formats, including archives, executables, PDF and Microsoft Office documents, JavaScript and so on. When these files are executed, run or otherwise opened- the malware download/ installation process is triggered.

Malware can also be disguised as or bundled with regular software and then proliferated through dubious downloading channels such as unofficial and freeware sties, p2p networks and other third-party downloaders.

Illegal activation tools and fake software updaters are the prime examples of that. Cracking tools infect systems instead of activating licensed software. Fraudulent updaters cause infections by exploiting bugs/ flaws of outdated software and/or by installing malicious software rather than updates.

How to prevent ransomware infection?

To avoid system infection through spam emails, it is advised against opening any suspicious and irrelevant emails –especially any attachments or links inside them. It is recommended to download from official and verified sources. Additionally, all programs should have to be activated/ updated using tools/ functions from genuine developers.
