How to remove File.decrypt ransomware and recover files

Easy tips to delete File.decrypt ransomware and decrypt data

File.decrypt ransomware is a ransomware type infection that is designed to encrypt stored files, rename them and then create “#File.decrypt#.txt” file with instructions how to contact the crooks behind the infection for the decryption.

It renames the filenames of the encrypted files by adding “.file.decrypt” extension to them. For example, it changes “1.jpg” to “1.jpg.file.decrypt”, “2.jpg” to “2.jpg.file.decrypt” and so on. The ransom note states that if the victims rename them further, they would lose their files permanently.

Also, it states that using third party data recovery software would permanently damage these files. The victims are informed to contact the attackers behind the infection via the provided email address within 72 hours to avoid their data being sold to darknet.

Ransomware victims can’t open their files until they are decrypted using a right decryption tool. Usually, crooks behind the infection are the only people who have the right decryption tool. But, paying/ contacting them is highly not recommend as there is a major chance of getting scammed.

The crooks often do not provide the decryption tool even if all their demands are met. Thus, the users suffer financial loss and their files remain encrypted files. Removing File.decrypt ransomware will prevent it from further files encryption. But the removal even will not restore the encrypted files.

In such a case, existing backups become necessary for the files encryption. If you do not have any backups available, you might have trouble in retrieving back your files. However, not all doors are closed even in this case.

Shadow Copies that are created by Windows OS for short time can be a data recovery option for you. The data recovery section below the post provides you complete guide how to recover files using Shadow Copies.

The File.decrypt ransomware might delete this Shadow Copy to harden the decryption process. In this case, you would have left with no choice than to rely on third party data recovery tools. Don’t worry! These tools are nowadays designed with advanced functionalities added and thus you can believe on them.

How did File.decrypt ransomware enter my system?

Most threat actors distribute malware by sending emails containing malicious files or links, hiding malware in software cracking tools or fake installers. You should know that it is not legal to sue any cracking tools/ pirated software. These are often promoted through questionable pages.

Also, crooks can use untrustworthy sources for downloading files or programs to distribute malware or they try to trick people into infecting their systems using Trojans. Examples of unreliable pages include p2p networks, free file hosting sites and third party downloaders/ installers.
